چکیده
We present the first medium-resolution (R ∼ 600) mid-infrared (8-13.3µm) spectra of 11 Be stars. A large number of lines are observed and identified in these spectra, including, as an example, 39 hydrogen recombination lines in the spectrum of γ Cas. In the majority of our spectra, all of the observed lines are attributable to hydrogen recombination. Two of the sources, β Lyr and MWC 349 also show emission from other species. Both of these objects show evidence of [Ne II] emission, and β Lyr also shows evidence of He I emission. We tabulate the effective line strength and line widths for the observed lines, and briefly discuss the physical implications of the observed line series. We also use a simple model of free-free emission to characterize the disks around these sources.

We present optical spectra of the Type Ic supernova 1994I in M51 and preliminary non-LTE analysis of the spectra. Our models are not inconsistent with the explosions of C+O cores of massive stars. While we find no direct evidence for helium in the optical spectra, our models cannot rule out small amounts of helium. More than 0.1 M⊙ of helium seems unlikely.

Optical spectra of SN1994W in NGC 4041 revealed the presence of a dense (Ne >10 8 cm circumstellar shell. An observation with the ROSAT HRI detected a source, with a luminosity of ∼8×10 ergs s, coincident with the position of SN1994W to within 1.4. The positional coincidence plus the optical evidence for a dense circumstellar shell support the identification of the X-ray source as SN1994W. Subj...

The Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey has collected ∼2000 spectra taken with multi-slit masks using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (Oke et al. 1995) in two widely separated fields on the sky, each ∼1 x 1 deg 2. Most of these objects are faint field galaxies; about 10% are Galactic stars and about 1% are broad-lined AGNs. I summarize the small scale clustering...

We present some highlights from the mid-infrared (5-16 μm) images of mergers of massive galaxies obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We have observed: 1) ultraluminous infrared nuclei, 2) luminous dust-enshrouded extranuclear starbursts, and 3) active galaxy nuclei (AGNs). In this contribution we discuss the observations of Arp 299, a prototype for very luminous infrared galaxie...
